COOPER

A defendant arrested early Christmas eve for assaulting his girlfriend pleaded guilty Monday before Logan County Common Pleas Court Judge Mark S. O’Connor to a misdemeanor charge.

David R. Cooper, 28, of Lakeview, pleaded guilty domestic violence, a first-degree misdemeanor.

Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department responded about 2 a.m. Dec. 24 to 509 S. Detroit St., Apt. 2, to a residence the defendant had shared with his girlfriend, Ashley Niebuer, a woman with whom he’d been involved for about five years.

First responders responded and found the victim in a stairwell, bloodied and her right eye was swollen shut. The swelling protruded from her face and was seeping clear fluid, officers report.

She reported the defendant hit her during a drunken argument. A Bellefontaine squad transported her to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment of the injuries.

He originally was charged with second-degree felony count of felonious assault, but the charge was amended after prosecutors learned the victim’s injuries were not as serious as had been originally feared.

He will be sentenced Feb. 10 following a presentence investigation.
