City native is named Trooper of the Year for Marion Post

John R. Banta of Upper Sandusky, a Bellefontaine High School graduate, has been named the 2013 Trooper of the Year at the Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The selection of city native Trooper Banta, 31, is in recognition of his outstanding service this year at his post. Fellow officers stationed at Marion chose Trooper Banta based on his leadership abilities, professional ethics, courteous treatment of others, enthusiastic work attitude and cooperation with supervisors, peers and the public.

Trooper Banta served in the U.S. Army and joined the highway patrol in 2007. He has served his entire career at the Marion Post.

Trooper Banta has received four commendation letters and has been a field training officer this year. Some of his other highway patrol awards include health and physical fitness and a five-year safe driving award.

He currently resides in Upper Sandusky with his wife, Jennifer, and son, Christian.
