Haitian accident claims Bellefontaine native

A former Bellefontaine resident died in an accident Wednesday while serving in Haiti with Heart of Compassion Ministries International.

Pat Kaufman, 57, was with two Haitian nationals working to gather rocks on a mountainside when the utility vehicle he was in went over a cliff, according to the HOCMI’s website.

One of the Haitians was able to jump off the vehicle and avoid serious injuries, however the driver sustained a broken leg and head injuries after the 30-foot drop near Soliette, Haiti. The driver is in serious condition in a Port-au-Prince hospital.

Mr. Kaufman’s wife, Cheryl, also a staff member with HOC, was at their Soliette residence at the time of the accident.

Also surviving are his mother Betty of Bellefontaine and two sons, Cole and his wife Holly, and Nick and his wife Mareena, who are the parents of Fenner. Mr. Kaufman was a 1974 graduate of Bellefontaine High School.

The Kaufmans have been involved in Haiti ministry since 2004 and with HOCMI since 2007. He was known for hard work and ability to fix things.
