UPDATE: Body found in Shelby County cornfield, connected to homicide case

SIDNEY — Deputies of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office report that the body of 78-year-old James Cole, the victim in an ongoing homicide investigation, was discovered in a Shelby County cornfield Friday morning.



His body was located about five miles west of Sidney off Smalley Road, and was transported to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy and additional forensic testing.

The cause of death appears to be the result of a gunshot wound, according to a joint press release from the Shelby County Prosecutor's Office, Shelby County Sheriff's Office and the Sidney Police Department.

Oct. 31, Sidney police arrested a Sidney area man in connection with Mr. Cole's death. Michael J. Wood, 39, of 412 Brookburn St., was charged with aggravated murder, a first-degree felony.

The suspect is incarcerated without bond in the Shelby County Jail. Shelby County Prosecutor Tim Sell indicates that his office will pursue the death penalty in this case.

Mr. Cole was reported missing Oct. 14. At the time, Sidney police reported no evidence of a struggle at his home.

Investigation of the circumstances surrounding Mr. Cole's death continues.
