Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department successfully tracked down a Mansfield man suspected of stealing trailers from Turner Trailer Sales, 3538 S. U.S. Route 68.
Michael A. Caldwell, 56, was apprehended by police around 3:30 a.m. Sunday in a parking lot behind Jack’s Aquarium, 2236 S. Main St.
He was stopped driving a gray 2003 Ford Expedition registered to Clarence Collins of Willard. In tow was a box trailer with a license plate that came back from a stolen trailer.
Officers took him into custody on a parole violation and charged him with two counts of receiving stolen property and a count of possessing criminal tools. Deputies have charged him with felony theft.
The SUV and trailer were impounded and officers found paperwork linking the trailer to Turner’s.
Owner Darren Turner told officers and deputies the trailer is valued at $4,000 and another smaller box trailer also was missing.
Police also received surveillance information from Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, 2168 S. Main St., showing an individual load six snowblowers, valued at more than $6,700, into a trailer hauled by the suspect’s vehicle around 11 p.m. Saturday.
Officers recovered two sets of bolt cutters, two cut padlocks from Turner’s and a bag containing wiring, parts and tools for connecting the electronics of a trailer to a tow vehicle.
Caldwell was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
