A measure appropriating $100,000 and another authorizing a contract to replace old rail bridges along the Simon Kenton bike path were approved during Tuesday’s Bellefontaine City Council meeting.
The action clears the way for Mayor Adam Brannon’s administration to sign papers necessary to start the 16-mile connector from north of Urbana to downtown Bellefontaine.
The Simon Kenton Pathfinders have raised nearly $300,000 toward the project and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Rails to Trails program has committed $500,000.
Bellefontaine is acting as the fiscal agent for the project, handling the bid process and bill payments. In exchange, the city collects an administrative fee.
It is not fiscally liable for any part of the project.
