Grants not likely for $900,000 project
The village of Belle Center most likely won’t see any free money to help fund a $900,000 project to replace the aging tower, consultants told village council during the regular Tuesday evening meeting.
And the top reason, they said: Residents aren’t paying a high enough water rate.
“I know you want to maximize grants or low-income loans, but your rates just don’t get you there,” Julie Ward of the Rural Community Assistance Program said. “Your rates are too low compared to the (median household income) and you don’t have a health hazard.
“They (the Community Development Block Grant board) are not going to fund a community that is not willing to raise its rates to keep its system up to date.”
