CLARIFICATION: Verizon Wireless officials have indicated it likely will be beyond 2014 before a permanent cell tower is constructed in Russells Point because no site has been zoned yet for a permanent tower, contrary to information that appeared here of the temporary structure.
Crews have started work on a temporary Verizon cell phone tower behind the Russells Point Municipal Building that will boost signal power in the area. The tower should be up and fully operational in the next three to four weeks, officials said. A permanent tower is scheduled for construction in 2014 at the water treatment plant along Elliott Road. The tower is expected to alleviate some of the headaches first responders have experienced with dropped calls and unavailable service. (EXAMINER PHOTO | RICK PITTS)
