Aaron Mertz, 33, of 214 Pratt St., Apt. 4, Bellefontaine, was arrested Monday afternoon for criminal trespass, along with felony breaking and entering and felony theft.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office received a suspicious vehicle complaint about 11:40 a.m. for the area of Stockyard Road and Township Road 56. The caller said the vehicle was parked near a barn on the property.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department located the vehicle a short time later on Park Street in the city and initiated a traffic stop.
Deputies also arrived at the traffic stop location, where they questioned the defendant. He said his vehicle had overheated on Stockyard Road, and he had stopped the vehicle to look for water.
The property owner identified several scrap metal items that were taken from the barn. The items were recovered at a local scrap metal yard.
Mr. Mertz was transported to the Logan County Jail.
The defendant also was arrested last month relating to a theft from an elderly woman’s home in Huntsville.
In that incident, he and a female subject had knocked at the door to talk about a recently completed landscaping project and asked to use the restroom. However, the 92-year-old victim became suspicious of their actions when they were out of her view for an extended period of time, and later she discovered they had taken jewelry from her home.
