URBANA — A baby died at Mercy Memorial Hospital late Saturday night and officers from the Urbana Police Division are investigating the death.
Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell said 5-month-old Serenity Treen was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.
Investigators are waiting for the results before deciding what, if any, action to take, the Springfield News-Sun reported Tuesday.
Few details were available about the case, but Lingrell said officers responded to the 100 block of Taft Avenue at 9:23 p.m. Saturday after a family member found the infant unresponsive in a bedroom.
The baby was taken to the hospital, but she was pronounced dead later that evening. Police processed the scene, and Champaign County Coroner Joshua Richards ordered the autopsy.
Lingrell declined to discuss whether the child showed any signs of physical harm.
No charges have been filed and the case is still under investigation.
Serenity's obituary appears in Wednesday's Examiner.
