Fatal crash investigation could take weeks

It could be weeks before investigators have enough information to determine what charges to file in Sunday’s fatal crash on Main Street near the westbound exit ramp from U.S. Route 33.

Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department have submitted a blood sample from Christian L. Fischer, 29, of East Liberty, even though officers do not suspect alcohol was a factor.

He reportedly turned southbound from the ramp and was reaching for a dropped cigarette and lighter when his sport utility vehicle crossed over into the northbound lanes and struck a motorcycle operated by Charles S. Carpenter, 39, of Galion, around 2:45 p.m.

Mr. Carpenter was transported by MedFlight to Grant Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

His passenger, Cathy L. Goodyear, 41, also of Galion, was flown by LifeFlight to Grant for treatment of a leg fracture and broken ribs. She remains hospitalized and was listed in fair condition this morning, a nurse supervisor said.

The couple had recently moved from Delaware, Ohio, to Galion, officials said, resulting in confusion about their addresses.

Both vehicles came to a rest in a northbound lane, police report.

Mr. Fischer was transported by a Bellefontaine squad to Mary Rutan Hospital for possible injuries. He was later released, according to officers.

It is the fifth fatal crash in Logan County this year.
