Sex offender sentenced to prison

A sexual deviant charged with victimizing two young girls was sentenced Monday before Logan County Common Pleas Court Judge Mark S. O’Connor to consecutive prison terms.

Timothy B. Showens, 50, of 700 Township Road 179, Apt. 7C, was sentenced to a combined four years in prison for two counts of gross sexual imposition, third-degree felonies. The defendant received two years on each charge, to be served one after the other, the judge ruled. He will also be labeled a Tier II sexual offender.

The abuse was reported in November 2011. The defendant molested the children for more than two years between 2009 and 2011, according to court documents.

He agreed to undergo a polygraph test with officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department, which he failed, prosecutors said at a July 8 plea.

The girls’ father addressed the court at Monday’s sentencing. He said the defendant scarred his entire family, victimizing not only the girls, but their older brother as well, who blamed himself for not protecting his sisters, the father said.

Mr. Showens grew up in foster care and was himself abused as a child, his attorney said. Defense asked for probation in this case, noting the defendant was legally eligible for it under the law, because of his lack of a criminal record.

The defendant is eligible for judicial release after 180 days, according to the law. Per the plea agreement, prosecutors have agreed to take no position on the offender’s early release when that time comes.
