Police spread word about local robber

Bellefontaine police hope a wider audience will provide a break in a May 24 robbery of Community Markets, 309 N. Main St.

Chief Brandon Standley said he reached out to media in Columbus, Cincinnati, Toledo, Cleveland and other cities to spread the word about the robbery.

“To my knowledge, it had not been in some of those major areas,” he said, “but as of Wednesday, I believe all had run something in their state news.

“We’re almost positve he’s not from Logan County. We can’t say for sure, but it doesn’t appear he’s local.”

Investigators have received limited tips locally, and those that have come in have not led anywhere, the chief said.

While there are similarities to the robbery here with single incidents in Champaign and Pickaway counties, Chief Standley said detectives have yet to see enough evidence from those cases to make a positive link.

The white male suspect, possibly in his 40s, was wearing blue jeans, a Cincinnati Reds baseball cap, black-framed glasses and a hooded jacket when he brandished a handgun around 10 p.m.

He forced two female employees into the rear of the store and ordered them to tie themselves up with cinch tie straps.

He made off with an undisclosed sum of money.

Chief Standley said his department also has sent information on the robbery to law enforcement in Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and Pennsylvania.

“I don’t think this guy is done,” the chief said. “I think he will hit again.”

He hopes people will take the time to again look at surveillance footage and try to imagine the suspect with and without glasses and the hat.

Anyone with information can call the department at (937) 592-1010 or (937) 599-TIPS (8477).
