Urbana woman on cell phone thwarts crime as it happens

URBANA — A 6-foot-5, 300-pound Urbana man was arrested after allegedly trying to rob a 63-year-old woman who was communicating information over a bluetooth cellular phone to another person on the end of the call.

Officers of the Urbana Police Department report that Dustin Macy, 26, of Urbana, was taken into custody shortly after the 5:30 p.m. Wednesday incident in the parking lot of Big Lots, 747 Scioto St.

“According to the victim, she was confronted by the suspect when she parked and exited her vehicle to go inside the store,” police reported in a statement. “The suspect approached the victim and demanded she give him her purse.

“The victim refused to turn the purse over and told the person she was talking with on her Bluetooth phone at the time that she was being robbed. The suspect demanded the purse from the victim a second time, but when she refused and continued to give out suspect information over the phone, the suspect got into his vehicle and fled the scene.”

Within minutes, officers had located the vehicle and took Mr. Macy into custody. He was lodged in the Tri-County Regional Jail on a third-degree felony robbery charge.

The suspect was previously convicted on theft charges stemming from a 2011 case, police said.
