West Liberty resident claimed in snowmobile crash

Deputies of the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office responded to a snowmobile accident about 8:45 p.m. Monday that claimed the life of a West Liberty resident.

Initial investigation reveals that Howard F. Wilkins, 42, was operating a Yamaha snowmobile northbound through a field in the 2400 block of east Kanagy Road in northern Champaign County. His snowmobile reportedly struck a tree.

Mr. Wilkins was pronounced dead at the scene by Champaign County Coroner Josh Richards.

Also responding to the scene were personnel with the West Liberty Fire Department and Macochee Joint Ambulance District.

Mr. Wilkins served as a Salem Township trustee in Champaign County.

The accident remains under investigation.
