The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program seeks volunteers to be “reading buddies” for children ages 3-5 in the local Kids Learning Place and Head Start centers.
Reading buddies instill a love of reading in children. Research shows that only 53 percent of children ages 3 to 5 are read to by family members, and most teachers do not have even five minutes a day to read individually with students in class.
The program requires a minimum commitment of one hour per month. Prior experience is helpful, but not necessary. Training is provided.
Volunteers must be willing to submit to a background check and a physical, which are provided free of charge.
While RSVP is geared for ages 55 and older, reading buddies volunteers can be anyone age 18 or older.
