Nearly 150 people attended the event at A Learning Place in Piqua to recognize the accomplishments of more than 1,500 volunteers throughout Logan, Darke, Miami and Shelby counties during National Volunteer Week with the theme of “Celebrating People in Action.”
Prior to the event, a record number of votes, 806,000, were cast for the volunteer award nominees this year via www.hits1055.com, literally crashing the Web site’s polls, according to a press release from the agency.
Mary Williston was named the Retired and Senior Volunteers Program Volunteer of the Year for Logan County. This year, she served as the co-chair for the second annual HandsOn West Central Ohio Martin Luther King Jr. Day food drive that collected more than 4,800 pounds of food for four local food pantries and soup kitchens.
