Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department charged a motorist with drunk driving and arrested his passenger for public intoxication following a 2:01 a.m. traffic stop today.
Steven Hilty Jr., 28, of Westerville, was issued citations for a marked lanes violation and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
Police report the suspect was weaving left of center while traveling northbound in the 500 block of south Main Street. A traffic stop was conducted on Arnold Avenue and officers reported a strong odor of alcohol coming from both the driver and his passenger, Alexander Cook, 26, of Dublin.
Both left tires on the suspect’s vehicle were flat and it was apparent the car had been in some kind of collision, but Mr. Hilty claimed he didn’t know what he struck, police report. He refused to submit to field sobriety tests or a breath test.
The vehicle was towed from the scene. Mr. Hilty was released to a sober person. Mr. Cook was lodged in the Logan County Jail because there reportedly wasn’t anyone local who could pick him up.
According to reports, police observed Mr. Hilty intoxicated at Moore’s Cafe, 111 S. Detroit St., while responding to an unrelated matter. They reportedly advised him then he should seek a ride home.
