West Liberty firefighters received two calls — one from the wife and another from a passing motorist traveling on U.S. Route 68 — alerting them to the 12:45 p.m. blaze at 6822 W. Kanagy Road in northern Champaign County.
A large plume of smoke emanating from the barn, near the West Liberty-Salem Schools complex, was visible for several miles.
Mrs. Krabill noticed the fire after checking the fuse box in the basement of the couple’s home because of a power outage.
Chief John Esch reports there were no injuries, and no people or livestock inside the structure at the time of the fire.
Damage to the barn and its contents was extensive. At least two tractors and some tractor tires were heavily damaged.
A neighbor who arrived on scene said this is the fourth fire between two separate owners to occur on the farm since the 1950s. The man said he helped rebuild one of the nearby barns destroyed by fire in the 1990s.
Loss estimates were not immediately available.
Urbana, Tri-Valley and North Lewisburg fire departments and the Macochee Joint Ambulance District assisted with personnel and equipment.
