Teen victim claimed in hit-and-run crash

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of Austin L. Houser, 15, of 2690 Township Road 40, Rushsylvania, along State Route 274 just north of Rushsylvania.

A Facebook page, R.I.P. Austin Houser, has received hundreds of likes and numerous comments from people paying their respects to Austin since being created Sunday morning.

Officers said the teen’s mother, Ellenna Houser, reported Friday that she had not seen her son since Thursday morning. A Benjamin Logan bus driver reported dropping the boy off at his home after school Thursday.

Saturday morning, Rushcreek EMS was called to the area in reference to an unresponsive male in the ditch, where Austin was pronounced dead. The Logan County Coroner’s Office also is investigating.

Preliminary reports from deputies indicate that Houser was struck by a motor vehicle that left the scene of the crash.

Deputies have recovered a suspect vehicle and are working with the Logan County Prosecutor’s Officer to obtain a search warrant to process the vehicle.

Anyone with information about the incident or who may have seen the teen walking along S.R. 274 Thursday afternoon is urged to call Det. Phil Bailey or Deputy Jeff Anspach at the Sheriff’s Office, 592-5731.

Friends are planning a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. today in West Mansfield’s Veterans Memorial Park to remember Austin.

Austin's obituary appears in today's Examiner.
