Crash nets OVI charges for 2 drivers

Travis R. Hower, 20, of 3978 County Road 21, DeGraff, and Brandon Scott Michael Diltz, 18, of 6490 County Road 112, Rushsylvania, each was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs following a non-injury crash early Saturday morning.

Mr. Hower reportedly was operating a southbound sport utility vehicle on State Route 235 at State Route 720 at the south edge of Lakeview about 2:20 a.m. when he slammed on his breaks suddenly and stopped on the roadway. Mr. Diltz’s southbound car struck the rear of the SUV.

Mr. Hower also was cited for underage consumption and for stopping in the roadway. He tested a .149 blood alcohol content level.

Mr. Diltz also was cited with underage consumption, driving under a court suspension and failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead. He tested a .107 BAC.

A passenger in the Diltz vehicle, Landon A. Schmelzer, 20, of 736 State Route 508, West Liberty, also was cited for underage consumption.

Seat belts reportedly were worn by all occupants in the crash. No damage was reported to the SUV, while the car sustained disabling damage.
