Mike McGarry survived a frantic charge from Shawn Bechtel
during the final round at Cherokee Hills to win the 1996 Logan County
Open title.
McGarry, who ends the two-year run of Dave Lyons as
Open champion, had a one-shot lead over Troy Wilson entering the final
round.
But it was Bechtel who threw a major scare into McGarry.
Fueled by a final round 73, Bechtel made up five strokes
on McGarry to force a playoff. Both golfers had three-round totals of
228.
McGarry, who shot 78 on the final day, finally got the
win on the third playoff hole.
Terry Gwinn, Mike Vetorino and Wilson carded 230s to
tie for third in the Championship Flight.
Gary Bolyard won A Flight with a 244, Dan Brownlee¹s
