Jail garden

Dry conditions and cooler temperatures greeted Logan County Jail inmates Gunther Helfrich, right, and William Dolan as they worked the jail’s half-acre garden Thursday. Inmates have been working daily since mid-April and are beginning to see corn (foreground), asparagus, tomato, potato and other plants sprout on their way to an expected August harvest. In addition to giving inmates something to do, for every seven days worked, their sentences are reduced by one day, saving the county money. The area they were preparing Thursday will be used to grow lettuce and radishes. (EXAMINER PHOTO | KRISTINE COOK)
