The sports nutrition class at West Liberty-Salem High School has organized a dodgeball tournament for 5 p.m. Saturday at the school to raise funds to benefit the Jenna Trust, a trust fund created by several area churches and the community to provide for the living expenses of senior Jenna Hostetler for the rest of her life.

In June 12, 2005, the then 13-year-old daughter of Mike and Nancy Hostetler was paralyzed in a diving accident at the West Liberty home of a friend and spent months in hospitals and therapy.

Since then, the community has rallied around the family and continues to raise funds for her care.

WL-S instructor Judy Conrad said the event idea originated as a service-learning project and evolved into a fundraiser for the teen.

Jenna’s classmates know she plans to go to Wright State University next year to major in accounting and will incur many additional expenses beyond the normal college experience, Mrs. Conrad shared.

“Several churches in the area have banded together to help raise $1 million for her trust fund,” she said. “We wish to contribute to this trust fund for one of our own students.”

Teams consist of high/middle school students as well as a team of teachers.

“Enthusiasm is high for this event and competition should prove to be exciting,” Mrs. Conrad continued.

Admission is $2 for students and $3 for adults, and concessions are available, with all proceeds going to the trust fund. Trophies will be awarded to the top two teams and local merchants are sponsoring door prizes.
