Russells Point looking to address abandoned properties

A measure that would require property owners to register abandoned properties passed a first reading this week before the Russells Point Village Council.

Council members also passed an initial reading of updates to the village’s property maintenance code.

Village leaders believe the new registration requirement will help protect neighborhoods from blight caused by a lack of adequate maintenance. Failure to comply with the registration could result in a $150 per day fine.

According to the ordinance, an abandoned property is vacant and under foreclosure.
