HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) — A trial is set to begin for a 17-year-old southwest Ohio teen accused of tying his parents' bedroom doors shut while they were inside and setting the house on fire.
The high school honor student, who was 16 at the time, is charged with attempted murder and arson in the October fire in Liberty Township, a suburb north of Cincinnati. The trial is set to open Monday.
The Cincinnati Enquirer (http://cin.ci/1oN1ZGi ) reports that the teen is being prosecuted as an adult on charges of attempted aggravated murder and aggravated arson. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
The teen's attorney has maintained that his client's real intention was to prevent the parents from stopping him from harming himself.
His parents escaped with minor injuries.
