Rachel Chiles shared a vocal/piano selection in her farewell and co-valedictorians Miranda Batton, Brianne Bowers and Caitlin Johnson offered encouragement, challenges and levity in their addresses to classmates.
Miranda, granddaughter of John and Scarlett Kinney of Ridgeway, referenced Jeremiah 29:11 and related the death of her mother at the age of six with the challenges the graduates will face going forward. She pressed her classmates to embrace their experiences — both good and bad — and trust in their abilities to persevere and succeed.
Brianne, daughter of Dan and Barb Bowers of Belle Center, likened her 2014 classmates to a favorite quote, “A lot of different flowers make up a bouquet,” and it was those differences that made their class strong. She also challenged the class to “look fear in the eye and do what you want to do and be what you want to be.”
Caitlin, daughter of Jim and Samantha Wagoner and Danny Johnson of Rushsylvania, brought levity to the room, starting her speech with a “selfie,” with all of her classmates in the background, and related her memories of them “like little screenshots of time, and in the end they are all we really have.”
