Haley continues Bellefontaine’s pipeline to state

A handful of practices and pure athleticism was all Jazmyn Haley needed in order to reach the Division II state track and field meet.

With just eight practices this season, the Bellefontaine standout was able to take second in the discus Thursday at the regional meet in Dayton and earn a trip to the state tournament.

“It’s awesome to be going to state,” said Haley. “I never thought I’d be going there. I went into regional nervous because I thought people would be throwing further, but they were about the same as me.”

A senior at Bellefontaine, Haley was the starting catcher and top hitter for the softball team. She competes in track and field when available. Despite limited practice time with discus, Haley was still able to launch the discus 122-5 on her first attempt of the day to earn a regional runner-up spot.

“That’s a testament to her athleticism,” said BHS throws coach Jim Robinson. “We’ve tried to count the times she has practiced this season. She only had two practices the entire month of April and only six practices in May. It’s her sheer athleticism and understanding.

“Jazmyn is in control of her body, and can fix technique knowing how to adjust and correct it. That is where her strength comes from. That and her determination. When it is time to perform, she has that grit to get the job done.”
