Group seeks to spur action on Ohio voter ID bill

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Ohio Christian Alliance says it's launching an effort to get state lawmakers to act on a bill requiring voters in the swing state to show a photo ID at the polls.

The group said Thursday it's going forward with an initiated statute petition. The effort requires multiple steps to spur action.

Supporters say the ID requirements would help safeguard Ohio's vote, though fraud cases are rare.

If the organization clears several signature hurdles, the General Assembly would have four months to act on the proposed ID requirements.

If legislators don't act, the group could gather additional signatures to get the issue before Ohio voters in 2015.

The House passed a photo ID proposal last legislative session, but it was not brought to a Senate vote.
