Bellefontaine and Benjamin Logan’s girls track and field teams made a big splash on the first day of action Thursday at the Division II district meet at Graham High School.
The Chieftains lead the girls team race after three events with 23 points. The Raider girls are holding onto the runner-up spot with 16 points, while Greenon and Milton-Union are tied for third with 13 points each.
Carroll leads the boys team race after four events with 27.5 points. Ben Logan leads Greenon 23-22 to hold the second-place spot. Brookville rounds out the top four with 20 points.
District action continues Saturday, with field events beginning at 3 p.m. and running event finals beginning at 3:30 p.m.
A big part of Bellefontaine’s first-day success can be attributed to its field event athletes, most notably the duo of senior Jazmyn Haley and junior Brenda Johnson.
Haley won the district title in the shot put with a throw of 38-71⁄2. Johnson, who placed at the Division I state meet last season, took the runner-up spot in the event with a toss of 37-71⁄2.
Ben Logan’s Alex Thompson provided another local highlight by winning a district title in the girls high jump. The Raider standout took first after a jump-off in the event with a winning height of 5-0.
