Outstanding seniors in the spotlight

Senior volunteers who were honored Tuesday during the annual Logan County Senior Day Event at the Bellefontaine First Church of God have touched lives in a wide variety of ways. Some of their community activities include helping those in distress by serving on an emergency squad, playing music for hospice patients, guiding riders at a therapeutic horseback riding center, and assisting with blood drives.

Event organizers report that 11 couples or individuals were nominated for the 2014 Outstanding Senior Award, which represents a record-setting number of nominations.

“This is a record number, but not a surprising number, because we know that a lot of good work is done by our Logan County seniors, and these 11 are certainly a good representation of that,” said Ann Finnicum of the Area Agency on Aging, which hosted the event.

From the list of many volunteer contributions, Ms. Finnicum announced the committee’s selection of the 2014 award winners, Gary and Nicki Trout of Seminole Island, Huntsville. They were nominated by Diane Mouser of Huntsville.

“We feel very honored today,” Mr. Trout said to the crowd. “There are so many outstanding volunteers in our county.”

“It’s a wonderful community to serve in,” his wife agreed. “There are so many opportunities here.”
