Man confesses to killing US soldier in Iraq

CINCINNATI (AP) — A man in Iraqi custody has confessed to killing an American soldier from Ohio whose remains were found four years after insurgents captured him.

Lt. Col. Alayne Conway, an Army spokeswoman, confirmed the confession Friday to The Associated Press.

Matt Maupin (MAW'-pin) was 20 years old when insurgents ambushed his fuel convoy near Baghdad in April 2004 and took him captive. His status wasn't known until his remains were found 2008. Maupin was from Batavia in southwestern Ohio.

An Iraqi judge speaking on condition of anonymity says the man, who is jailed in Baghdad, originally confessed to the killing in 2009, and was tried and sentenced to death.

The judge says the man is now being retried over a paperwork problem. He described him as Iraqi and an al-Qaida leader.
