Retired USAF SMSgt. David W. Scheff, 51, of West Liberty, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014, in his home after a courageous five-year battle with cholangiocarcinoma.

He was born Oct. 14, 1962, in Glen Cove, N.Y., a son of the late William D. and Sheila Walker Scheff.

David is survived by his wife of 23 years, Gina; two daughters, Christina and Catherine; one son, Dennis (Mellissa) Siler of St. Mary’s County, Md.; one brother, John (Margaret) Walker of Florida; two grandchildren, Savannah and Dylan Siler; in-laws, Thomas and Mary Porter and William and Debra Wilson, all of Bellefontaine, and John and Tina Wheatley of Arkansas, Tadd and Virginia Chaney and Noah and Pam Dillon, all of Springfield.

David enlisted in the U.S. Air Force following high school and retired after 24 years of service. While stationed at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, he served as flight chief of Air Force One under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Following his military retirement in 2003 he went back to school and graduated with a master’s of business aviation degree.

For the past decade he was employed by Booz-Allen-Hamilton as a senior aviation consultant. He was a member of the American Legion 426 in West Liberty, Mad River Lodge 161 F&AM, and was on the board of the Champaign Aviation Museum, Urbana.

Burial with full military honors was today at Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty.
