Pastor Carrol C. Mathys, 65, of West Mansfield, died Thursday, May 1, 2014, at OSU Wexner Medical Center surrounded by his family and close friends.

Born Sept. 28, 1948, in Kenton, he was the son of James and Thelma Wood Mathys, who survive in York Center.

On Aug. 20, 1967, at the Methodist Church in Raymond, he married the former Joyce Hicks and she survives, along with his children, James Darnell (Debbie) Mathys of Mt. Victory, Renee (Brent) Kavanagh of West Mansfield, Stacy (Charles) Carpenter of West Mansfield, Tracy (Tom) Carpenter of Marysville, Jeremy (Elizabeth) Mathys of West Mansfield and Justin Mathys of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; brothers and sisters, Lorna Poling of Marysville, Zane (Cathy) Mathys of Bellefontaine, Morgan (Paula) Mathys of Raymond, Rhonda (Robin) Winkle of West Mansfield, Jonathan (Brenda) Mathys of Bellefontaine, Rochelle (Pat) White of Patriot, Tammy (Darren) White of Richwood, Joseph (Emily) Mathys of Marysville; and many nieces, nephews, church family and friends.

A 1966 graduate of Marysville High School, he was a self-employed contractor and owner and operator of C.M. Construction.

But his true occupation was serving the Lord. Carrol founded the Grace Chapel House of Prayer where he pastored for 35 years before retiring two years ago. He enjoyed studying the Bible, visiting with his parishioners, working puzzles in the winter time and shooting guns with his grandchildren.

Going Home services begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Grace Chapel House of Prayer with Pastor Larry Burchett and his son, Darnell Mathys officiating. Burial follows in the York Cemetery. Calling is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Mannasmith-Schnurrenberger Funeral Home in West Mansfield and also an hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Grace Chapel House of Prayer Compassion Fund.
