BMS teacher investigated for firearm incident

The parents of a Bellefontaine Middle School student attended the Bellefontaine Board of Education’s meeting Monday evening to express their concerns over an alleged November incident in which their son said he saw a firearm in a BMS teacher’s vehicle on school property.

A statement from Bellefontaine City Schools officials relates that the incident was first reported by a parent April 9, indicating that a teacher, who has a concealed carry permit, “had conveyed and handled a firearm in a potentially unlawful manner.

“The parent’s statements indicated also that the conduct of the teacher in question had caused a student to be exposed in close proximity to the firearm in question,” the statement continued.

District officials said they immediately contacted the Bellefontaine Police Department.

Officers and the Logan County Prosecutor’s Office have been investigating the allegations. The case soon may be presented to a Logan County grand jury.

An investigation by district administrators led to the questioning of a teacher who is currently employed at Bellefontaine Middle School and has not been charged as of this time.

The parents of the student questioned how long it would take to have this situation resolved, as their son is being tutored at home.

“We do care, and this is being looked at and is going through all of the required legal steps,” President Joan Haushalter said. “We’re all parents as well, and we understand that your child is your number one priority.”

Also in the district’s statement, officials addressed concerns of school safety.

“The district regrets any distress to parents which reports of this incident may have caused. The Bellefontaine City School District is deeply committed to the safety and security of its students, and vigorously enforces the laws and board policies dealing with the conveyance of firearms into school safety zones.”
