Ohio man pleads guilty in toddler's death

ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) — A northeast Ohio man whose girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter died from injuries suffered while he was baby-sitting has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors in Elyria, west of Cleveland, dropped murder and felonious assault charges against 27-year-old Luis Lopez. He's expected to be sentenced to eight years in prison at a hearing next week.

The (Elyria) Chronicle-Telegram (http://bit.ly/1gmL5J6 ) reports that prosecutors agreed to the reduced charges after an investigation showed Aaviana Payne likely died after Lopez accidentally dropped her on the stairs and she hit her head. They said Lopez didn't seek medical attention for the girl, which led to her death.

Lopez also pleaded guilty Tuesday to endangering children and domestic violence. His attorney said he was taking responsibility for his actions.
