Former church secretary sentenced for embezzlement

Former St. Patrick Catholic Church secretary Mary Begley Smith was sentenced Thursday in Logan County Common Pleas Court for embezzling more than $100,000.

She was sentenced to 10 days in the Logan County Jail, five years’ community control, 180 hours of house arrest and ordered to serve 200 hours of community service along with a substance abuse assessment and psychological evaluation by visiting Judge Sumner Walters of Lima.

A presentence investigation determined the defendant stole approximately $104,000. A restitution hearing will be conducted at a later date.

Mrs. Smith, 44, of Rushsylvania, pleaded guilty to a fourth-degree felony count of theft on Nov. 22. She was indicted in August on a single count of third-degree felony theft.
