bellefontainepolice patch

Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department are investigating a two-vehicle crash that injured two teenagers, one of whom was riding in the back of pickup truck Saturday after leaving the Bellefontaine High School homecoming dance around 11:20 p.m.

Gavin Brinkman, 16, of Bellefontaine, and Kaylynn Payne, 16, of Lakeview, each was transported by a Bellefontaine squad to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment of non-incapacitating injuries.

Gavin was a passenger in a pickup operated by Cody D. Dicus, 19, of Bellefontaine. There were eight other teenagers in the pickup. Officers and school officials at the dance attempted to stop the pickup from leaving but Mr. Dicus ignored them.

He was northbound in the 900 block of south Detroit Street when the pickup was hit from behind by a car operated by Brandon L. Barker, 19, of Rushsylvania, who was cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead.

Kaylynn was a passenger in the Barker car along with two other girls. She was not using a safety belt at the time of the crash, officers reported.

Damage was minor to the vehicles.
