City school administrators have decided not to renew Schmidt's contract.
"I am grateful for the opportunity I had to be the head football coach at Bellefontaine," said Schmidt on Tuesday. "I am disappointed I will not be able to continue coaching here."
After three seasons as head coach, the former Chieftain player and Wittenberg University graduate finished with a 7-22 overall record and 1-8 record last season.
The Chiefs were hampered by numerous injuries last fall and suffered several close losses.
"We played a lot of young kids the last couple of years," said Schmidt. "I am proud of the kids and the coaches on our staff. We were trying to build the program and do things the right way.
"With a lot of young kids in place, I was looking forward to seeing what we could have done with another year of growth."
Schmidt, who has also coached in the baseball and basketball programs at BHS, said he would like to get back into coaching down the line.
