Another dramatic finish sent Riverside’s girls basketball team further into the postseason.
The Pirates used a late game-winning shot from Ashley Jones to sink Triad 61-60 and claim a Division IV sectional championship Saturday at Sidney High School. Riverside (15-7) now plays Southeastern (14-9) in the district semifinal at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Tippecanoe High School. The victory gave the Pirates their first sectional title since 1990. “It was great for our kids and great for our program,” said RHS head coach Dean Sanford. “It is big for us and I don’t think we will see the full effect of this until some time in the future. This group has worked extremely hard and I am real pleased with how they have done. “The girls have the mindset they want to keep playing and don’t want to stop. We got down against Houston in the sectional semifinal and again against Triad and they just kept fighting. They are doing the little things that are the important to us in advancing in the tournament.” Jones was the latest player to step up with late-game heroics for Riverside. With the Pirates trailing 60-58, Jones hit a three-pointer with six seconds left in the game to give Riverside the lead for good. Jones, a five-foot junior guard, played in just seven varsity games for the Pirates this season and scored a total of 21 points.
