Heaberlin, Carter lead Riverside to 61-58 win

SIDNEY — It was a milestone night here for Riverside senior Amelia Carter and also an evening of heroics for fellow senior Abby Heaberlin.

The pair helped the Pirates upset second-seeded Houston 61-58 Wednesday in a Division IV sectional semifinal at Sidney High School.

Riverside (14-7) advances to the sectional championship game at 1:45 p.m. Saturday against Triad (17-5).

Heaberlin was the late-game hero for Riverside for the second time this season and Carter surpassed the 1,000 point mark for her career.

With the game tied 58-58, Heaberlin drilled the eventual game-winning three point basket from the right wing with eight seconds remaining.

After falling to Houston 61-47 in the regular season, Pirates’ head coach Dean Sanford was thrilled to see his team get some redemption.
