New looks add excitement to start of prep football season

The start of the local prep football season always brings a sense of anticipation and excitement for players, coaches, parents and fans.

I also look forward to the start of each fall campaign as there is always a long list of storylines to watch. Here are some of those to look out for this fall.

NFL turmoil returns

The National Football League has had plenty of stories and turmoil during the offseason. In predictable fashion, plenty of new stories have surfaced in time for preseason. Here are a few of my favorite:

Crabtree confused

The latest news in the NFL came Thursday with the stunt Michael Crabtree is pulling. The first-round pick and rookie wide receiver out of Texas Tech is threatening to sit out a year and re-enter the NFL draft if he doesn’t get the money he feels he deserves.

It’s hard to argue with the pick of OSU as Big Ten favorite

As this week’s Big Ten meetings in Chicago have reinforced, the expectations are again high for Ohio State’s football team this fall.

Despite losing star tailback Chris Wells, top receivers Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline and three of its defensive leaders in linebackers Marcus Freeman and James Laurinaitis and cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, the Buckeyes were picked Monday by a panel of medial members who cover the conference to win the Big Ten.

Odds and ends

There has been a flurry of major sports stories over the past week. Here are my thoughts on what has been going on of late in the sports world.

Poor Tom
It would have been one of the best sports stories of all time if 59-year-old Tom Watson held on to win the British Open. Watson has always been a class act and this would have been a fitting way to add an exclamation point to his career. It was painful to watch as his game unraveled in the playoff against Stewart Cink.
